Technology has changed the way we do just about everything remotely. You can work from home instead of commuting, you can order groceries online and have someone drop them off on your front porch, and with a Ring doorbell, you can keep track of everything that’s happening at home even when you’re not there.

These latest marvels allow you to see and speak to the person at your front door, no matter where you are, as well as record any activity within range of the video camera to protect your home and property. It includes a motion-activated camera, a microphone, and a speaker. If this is something you’re considering investing in, you’ll need to know a little about the Ring doorbell installation process, as it’s not plug-and-play. Follow this step-by-step guide to replace your traditional doorbell and provide peace-of-mind for the whole family.

Remember to Install the Ring Doorbell App

It may seem like a simple step, but it’s easy to forget. Download the Ring app after you’ve opened the box and removed all its contents. Check the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and search for Ring Video Doorbell. You’ll also want to register the device, create and account, and set it up BEFORE you mount it on the house.

When you set up your account, you’ll be asked to choose your subscription level. Ring Protect Basic covers each doorbell or camera for $3.99 per month. The Ring Protect Plus subscription covers multiple doorbells and cameras for $10 per month. The Protect Plus plan unlocks premium features, provides 180 days of video history and discounts on other Ring products.

Next, you’ll want to charge the battery on your video doorbell. Take it out of the box and plug the orange cable into the back of the unit. If a charger was not included, you can use a standard micro-USB cable that’s plugged into a wall outlet or a USB cable port. Charging is complete when the light on the front of your Ring doorbell is solid blue. Test the live video feed to your Smartphone by pressing the front button.

How to Set Up a New Doorbell

Installing a new Ring doorbell in place of an existing traditional doorbell involves a little prep work to make room for the new device. Before replacing a wired doorbell, you’ll need to turn off the power to the unit by switching off the circuit breaker. Next, remove the old doorbell by unscrewing it from the wall, detaching the wires, and leaving them free. Now you’re ready to install the Ring Video Doorbell.

    • Hold the mounting bracket on the wall and insert the level provided below the two screws. Draw a pencil mark on each corner of the bracket making sure the bracket is level, then, fish the existing doorbell wires through the hole in the back. If installing on stucco, brick, or concrete, drill holes at each pencil mark and push plastic anchors inside. Mount the bracket.
    • Connect the wires by wrapping one wire around each screw on the bracket. Make sure the wires are not touching or crossed. Tighten the screws down.
    • If you have a digital door chime, you’ll need to install the diode provided. Attach the diode by wrapping the wires around the screws with black plastic. Do not use a diode if you have a mechanical chime as it will damage it.
    • Place your Ring Video Doorbell into the bracket, push firmly in and down to lock in place.
    • Tighten the security screws on the bottom of the bracket.
    • Turn on the power at the circuit breaker, push the white button on the front of the device to start the pairing process with the app.
